Weekly review – Friday 17th May 2019

While there is still a week left of this half term, we are beginning to look towards the next half term already! Please remember to send in your child’s blazer in preparation for Speech Day, these can be left in the classrooms until they are needed. There will be a rehearsal for the children in 30th May and then the day itself begins at 8am on Friday 31st May in the Memorial Hall. Thank you for sending in your child’s consent forms for the upcoming residential to Ayutthaya. We are very much looking forward to the trip, as are the children!

Literacy

In Literacy we have started looking at newspapers and the possible theories behind the death of King Tutankhamun. Children will be designing their own front pages for a newspaper based on the theories they have looked at in class. Was it a scorpion, a snake or something more sinister that brought about the end of the Boy King…?

Maths

In Maths we have continued our geometry unit, this week we have been looking at parallel and perpendicular lines and the properties of different quadrilaterals. Ask your child to spot any they can around the house!

Science

In Science the children have been moving on from food chains and looking at food webs. They have looked at how different species are interdependent, and how habitats can be changed when there is a threat to any single part of the food web.

 Art

In Art we have been continuing to look at printing techniques, using string on printing plates and forming it into Egyptian themed designs.

History

We have been examining Egyptian gods and creating our very own set of top trump cards. Children looked at what the different Gods were said to be in charge of, and compared different aspects, such as their popularity and their importance to Ancient Egyptian society.

Weekly review – Friday 10th May 2019

Even though it’s been a short week, we’ve crammed an awful lot in! Thank you to all those parents and carers who came to the residential briefing on Thursday. The children and staff are all very much looking forward to the trip to Ayutthaya on 13-14 June. Please note that consent and medical forms need to be returned to the class teacher by Thursday 16 May. It was lovely to see so many children supporting our charity partners through today’s non-uniform day. Thank you for supporting this incredibly important initiative. Please note it is 4CL’s class assembly on Tuesday 14 May, if you would like to watch the assembly, please come to the Memorial Hall from 7.45am.

In Literacy this week we have been exploring more about Ancient Egypt, and beginning to plan our adventure stories set inside the inner chambers of a pyramid. Children have looked at life and artefacts in Ancient Egypt, and will be writing their stories up using the plans they make.

Maths

In Maths this week we have been exploring angles and shapes. The children have been on an angle hunt around the school, identifying acute, obtuse, right and reflex angles. They have ordered these and have begun looking at the properties of shapes.

History

Children have looked at the stories behind the pyramids. They have investigated how the pyramids were built, and have created their own plan for building a pyramid

Art

We have been exploring printing in art this week. The children have used polystyrene tiles to explore how to print Egyptian shapes. They have also investigated blending different colours to produce a range of colours and tones.

Science

The children have continued looking at food chains this week, creating their own, and identifying the producers and consumers in a variety of habitats. They have also identified the herbivores, omnivores and carnivores, and worked out whether they are primary, secondary or tertiary consumers.

Weekly review – Friday 3rd May 2019

In their first full week back, the children in Year 4 have been experiencing many of the thrills and spills of Egyptian life! This morning we had a wonderful whole school Celebration of the Coronation of HM King Rama X. The students were impeccably behaved and listened with great respect to the words and songs.

In Literacy we have started reading “The Gods are Watching”, the tale of a servant boy in Ancient Egypt. children have created their own amulets, and looked at the meaning behind different gem stones and images. They looked at the different Gods in Ancient Egypt, and had a hands on experience of crawling through an Egyptian tomb. Ask your child what they saw when they were inside, if you dare…!

In Maths we have been looking at area and perimeter of rectilinear shapes. We investigated whether having a larger perimeter always meant having a larger area, and how knowing our factor pairs helped determine length of sides when you only know the total area of a shape.

In Art we created Egyptian sunset scenes using watercolour techniques and cutting out shapes from black paper. The effects were striking!

In Science we looked at the difference between producers and consumers in the food chain. Children explored food chains in different climates – savannah, tundra and woodland – and the different predators and prey found in these locations.

In Humanities we explored Tutankhamun and made an infographic and timeline of his life and the events taking place in Ancient Egypt during his lifetime.

Arty Egyptian landscapes with 4CL

4CL used watercolors and black paper to create some fantastic Egyptian sunset scenes. Here are a few of them!

4MD Tomb Makers!

4MD have been learning about measures over the past two weeks. We have learned the importance of measuring accurately, and understanding how to convert between different measurements. As part of our lessons, we also learned the units of measurement the Ancient Egyptians used such as the cubit. This last week we have revisited area and perimeter and designed a pharaoh’s tomb. Below, we are calculating the area and perimeter of the chambers inside the tomb.
