Residential Display

Our display in the Year 6 corridor showing the highlights from our residential in January is up and nearly complete. Head to our space to take a look and, in the coming weeks, you will soon have access to even more photos and memories (apologies, we’re saving some for the Year 6 Graduation Assembly).

Loy Krathong

Dear Parents,

On Thursday 22nd November, all YouTime activities are cancelled due to Loy Krathong celebrations in the nearby area and the resulting traffic this may cause. Supervision will not be taking place on this day also so all students will need to be collected at 2:20pm from their class teachers.

If you are unable to arrive by 2:30, students will be taken directly to reception where they will await collection.

Anti-bullying week

Dear Parents,

Next week (12-16 November), schools across the UK will be addressing the difficult and often complex issue of bullying in Anti-bullying week 2018; an initiative promoted by the Anti-bullying alliance (https://www.anti-bullyingalliance.org.uk).

This year’s theme is ‘Choose Respect’ and we would like to kickstart the week with an ‘Odd Socks Day’ on Monday 12th November. We ask that all students support the event by wearing odd socks.  We are suggesting a voluntary contribution (recommended 100THB – handed to class teachers on the day) which will go to our charity partners, one of which is The Hub, established by Thai Childline.

Diwali – 14/11/18

Dear Parents,

On Wednesday 14/11/18, we will be celebrating the Hindu festival of Diwali (Festival of lights). Our fantastic SP have been selling traditional Diwali dress before and after school. We invite all students in Year 6 to dress up on the day.

Digital Leaders 2018/19

Today, in our Year 6 Assembly, Mr. Knight – our Leader of Digital Literacy – shared with us another new opportunity for Year 6 students. He explained about the ‘Digital Leaders’ and inspired lots of us to think about how we can develop our skills and support others. This is open to all Year 6 Students without a current role of responsibility (House Captain, Head/Deputy Head, School Council, Games/Music Captain).

I would encourage all students to consider this opportunity and submit their form and evidence to the QR code link before 29/10/18. For more information, contact Mr.Knight or a member of the Year 6 Team.

Non-Uniform

Dear Parents,

Tuesday 9th October is now a non-uniform day for Junior School to raise additional funds for the Sulawesi Charity Appeal. The school charity committee have pledged 200,000THB to help support with this disaster.

As ever, your generosity is greatly appreciated and we ask that students bring a 100THB donation to school. For more information regarding this, please see the letter sent to all parents via the Parent Portal.

Swim Carnival

 

 

 

The Swim Gala this year has taken on a new form as designed by Ms.Gill and the Swimming coaches. For Year 6, the 2018 Swim Carnival will take place on Monday 8th October during lesson 1 and 2. Students must bring their swimming kits to school as well as a water bottle for this event. Parents, you’re more than welcome to join us!

Note: If your swimming is in L5 on Monday, you will still have your swimming lesson so you might want to bring 2 swim kits to school.

This is a ‘House Event’ and the emphasis will be on the students having fun and demonstrating team-spirit.

 

Harkness in Year 6

Dear Parents,

I write to you with information regarding the Harkness sessions which started this week.

The Harkness Method of Discussion Based Learning is used by our Sixth Form as a tool for their ‘Reading the World’ programme – led by Dr. Maxine Clarke.

Fiona Russo, James Conduit and Ms. Weston attended a course at Philips Exeter Academy in Boston USA, the birthplace of Harkness. It was an amazing experience and on reflection we felt that this method could be utilised with our Y6 students. The skills that are learnt and developed will enhance their depth of learning and become embedded as lifelong skills. Dr. Maxine Clarke, Director of Reading the World will also be leading a group.

On April 9, 1930, philanthropist Edward Harkness wrote to Exeter’s Principal Lewis Perry regarding how a substantial donation he had made to the Academy might be used:

“What I have in mind is [a classroom] where [students] could sit around a table with a teacher who would talk with them and instruct them by a sort of tutorial or conference method, where [each student] would feel encouraged to speak up. This would be a real revolution in methods.” The result was “Harkness Teaching,” in which a teacher and a group of students work together, exchanging ideas and information, around a table.

This methodology is increasingly being adopted by schools and universities across the world and the skills are increasingly leading to greater success at school, university and beyond. The students will learn to interact with other minds, listen carefully, speak respectfully, accept new ideas and question old ones, using new knowledge, and enjoying the richness of human interaction.

The sessions will take place in a Harkness designed classroom in our Sixth Form Centre every Tuesday (Group A and B), Wednesday (Group C) and Thursday (Group D) during a slightly extended lesson 6 (1.45 – 2.45). We will inform You Time / Excellence providers that the children will go directly to the dining hall to be registered. For those children not doing You Time we will take them to the Memorial Hall Atrium at 2.45 for collection or send them to the bus room.

 

In terms of selection for this, all students in Year 6 will take part this year. However, it isn’t possible to do so at the same time. We have 4 groups of 16 students that have started so far and these have been selected by class teachers. The first children selected, were the students who put themselves forward to become a House Captain but were unsuccessful. It was decided that, as a school, this was some compensation for all of their hard-work and effort. Following this, class teachers randomly selected other students to ensure there are equal numbers across the classes.

In this round, 64 students are taking part in the programme and therefore when the next cycle begins, the other half of our Year 6 students will take part.

Term 1a Overview

Dear Parents,

I am extremely delighted to provide you with the first Parent Overview of the academic year 2018/19. A very warm welcome to all Year 6 students and their families.

This year is a very special year – the children are now at the top of the Prep School and with that comes greater responsibility, opportunities to lead and a real sense of growing independence.

We will begin our learning with the topic of Rivers; following the journey of the Chao Phraya from source to mouth. This is an excellent opportunity to develop students’ geography skills, but of course, we will use the topic to develop new skills and knowledge across the curriculum.

For home learning, we will be asking the children to one activity per week to complete and share with their teacher. Below I will outline some areas of learning we will be completing this half-term.

Literacy:

We will use the Talk for Writing programme to develop students’ writing, both fiction and non-fiction. This half-term, we will explore journalistic writing focusing on the lives of people who live on the Chao Phraya River and how the floods of Bangkok in 2011 affected their lives and businesses.

We will link with a Senior School Drama teacher in each 10-day cycle. Our Guided Reading sessions will also build in analysis of non-fiction and fiction texts.

Maths:

In Term 1a we will follow a Maths Mastery approach to our learning in our new Maths classes. Each lesson will challenge the students to gain a greater understanding of the Year 6 Curriculum objectives. We will develop fluency, reasoning and problem solving, with a focus upon ‘the language of Maths’ being used in the classroom to explain and justify our calculations. Our objectives begin with learning about the Number system, then using the 4 operations and we will end Term 1a by focusing on fractions. We will be expecting all students to develop a quick recall of times tables and their division counterparts, the use of formal written methods and application of the inverse to check working out.

Topic:

We will be focusing on the journey of a river, identifying its stages and looking at their impact on the environment. We will also look at the uses of the Chao Phraya and other world rivers by humans and wildlife alike. Our trip to Chulachomklao Fort will give us the ideal vantage point for observing the river delta and understanding the vital role played by mangroves in protecting the land from flooding.

Science:

After establishing some clear guidelines for Safety in the Science lab, students will begin to develop their ability to design and carry out investigations. They will then learn how micro-organisms can be harmful and beneficial by carrying out their own practical investigations.

Art:

Students will develop their painting skills this half term with a focus upon vocabulary and techniques. They will use a range of paints (watercolour and poster paint) to improve blending, mixing and creating textures.

Computing:

This half term students will use Microsoft Excel to extend their spreadsheet skills through a series of modelling activities. Where possible, we will collect data linked to the Chao Phraya to investigate pollution and water flow.

Learning for Life:

We will develop students’ personal and social well-being in a range of ways. We will empower them to set their learning targets, to be excellent team-players and to care for those in the school community, for example as play leaders. We will also challenge the students to apply for roles of responsibility. This year, our school values are now ‘Character Strengths’ and will be focused upon for a whole half-term. Our first is ‘Respect’ and we will be exploring what it means to be respectful and how we can ensure that people respect us.
