In this novel the green light that Gatsby always stares at which is at the end of Daisy’s East Egg dock is a symbolic feature in this novel. The green light is right across the bay from Gatsby’s West Egg lawn and I think it represents Gatsby’s dreams and the future that he can never reach.
In the begging of the novel Nick sees Gatsby reaching out towards the green light. The author first describes Gatsby when he was looking towards the green light where Daisy is. “He stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and, far as I was from him, I could have sworn he was trembling. Involuntarily I glanced seaward – and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away.”
The green light actually has many meanings to it such as money, dream, success, and Daisy – for Gatsby. Perhaps for Gatsby, Daisy was just like the green light which he can never actually hold in his hands but which helped him to go on and at least try to fulfill his dreams of having Daisy on his side and not give up on his dreams. Also the fact the green light isn’t an object that you can actually possess which this also means that he can never have Daisy just like the green light.
These words conclude the novel “Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us” and find Nick returning to the theme of the significance of the past to dreams of the future, which is also represented by the green light.
