We have had another great week in Year 1! We are still really enjoying learning all about Africa and the children know so many interesting facts.

This week in Literacy, we have been learning about nonfiction texts. The children can now identify the key features of nonfiction texts such as a contents page, subheadings, labels, diagrams and captions. They especially enjoyed learning facts about African animals and spent time thinking about different adjectives to describe them. Towards the end of the week, we started planning our very own piece of nonfiction writing. We chose an animal to find out lots of facts about and started planning our writing using a planning grid. Next week we will be writing these facts down to make a class fact book about African animals!

In Maths, we have been practising our addition and subtraction skills. We have been working with numbers to 20 and practising how to work out the answer to missing number calculations using different resources to help us. We have also been putting these skills into practise with some problem solving activities.

In Art, we have been thinking about the patterns on the skin of different African animals. We looked at them closely and used these observations to make our own printing blocks. We will be using these printing blocks next week when we print on to our t-shirts!

In Science, we have continued to learn about a range of animals and we learned how to classify them. We now know which animals are reptiles, mammals, birds, fish and amphibians. Test us at home!

On Thursday, we had such a wonderful day celebrating Chinese New Year. The children absolutely loved watching the lion dance and trying some delicious Chinese food at snack time.

We are really excited for next week as we will be visiting City Campus to take part in a variety of African activities!

Have a lovely weekend and we will see you next week, for the final week of term 2a.
