Welcome back Year 4 children and parents! We hope you all had a relaxing and peaceful break over the holidays. We are very pleased to see that the children have come back to school refreshed and ready to learn. We would like to thank you for your time and support during this week’s parents evenings. As always, if you wish to discuss your child’s learning, please feel free to contact class teachers directly.
This week, we launched our new topic ‘Natural Disasters’ with a shocking discovery in our classrooms… an earthquake! On Tuesday morning, Year 4 were surprised to find their classrooms had been completed destroyed by a destructive force of nature. This provided the children with an engaging insight into the topic and created a fantastic discussion about their upcoming learning. We were also fortunate enough to listen to an interesting presentation by Miss Weston on how she (and people she knows) have been personally affected by natural disasters in Bangkok and Nepal.
In Literacy, we consolidated our understanding of sentence structure and punctuation using ‘Rainbow Grammar.’ This will really help to support the children when writing their suspense stories over the next few weeks.
In Numeracy, we began to look at decimals, including place value, comparison and ordering. We have also started to implement a new ‘mastery’ approach to Numeracy in order help develop the children’s fluency, reasoning and problem solving skills.
In Humanities, we have researched historical natural disasters using the iPads and used a timeline to place the events in chronological order. In Science, we started to explore our new topic of ‘sound’ by looking at how different musical instruments create their sounds. We also played an exciting game in which we had to guess the sounds we could hear. In Art, we developed our brush skills in preparation for our painting study about Hokusai, ‘The Great Wave’.
