Friday 11th January 2019

We hope you all had a very restful holiday and would like to wish you a Happy New Year. This week, we have quickly settled back into our routine. Our memories are refreshed and we have already made an excellent start on term 2’s learning.

In Literacy, we have been writing persuasive letters. Our letters encourage a local business to consider ways that they can further reduce food wastage. We have researched why it is important that we save food and identified ways that this can be done. This all links to our work on sustainable development goals. We are definitely excited to read the response to our letters and hope that they implement some of our solutions. Next week, we will begin to look at how to write an effective suspense story.

In Numeracy, we have begun to look at Fractions. We understand what fractions are and when we may need to use them in everyday life. We can now identify fractions of shapes and learnt some tricky mathematical vocabulary to help us with this, ‘numerator and denominator.’  After that, we began to find equivalent fractions through using our knowledge of multiplication and division as well as the help of a fraction wall.

In Humanities, we have started our new ‘Natural Disasters’ topic. We have shown great enthusiasm towards this topic and many of us already knew some interesting facts which we were eager to share. We combined technology with our first lesson and used Google Maps to identify the location of places where natural disasters have already occurred. We then created our own key using plasticine, labels and cocktail sticks to show these on a world map! In Computing, we have started to think about how our electronic devices actually work. We looked at what a network is and learnt how our computers communicate through this.

In Science this half term, we will be exploring Sound. We began by thinking about what we already know about sound and what we would like to find out. We will review our questions at the end of this half term to see whether we have some answers. Our work in the Science Lab consisted of making a lot of noise! We looked at how sound travels and considered why we can actually hear sound.

We hope you all a very happy weekend.

Many Thanks,

     The Year 4 Team
