Dear Parents

Welcome to our final topic of what has been an incredible year: Bright Sparks. Harry Potter seems so long ago, having explored India, natural disasters, Stumbledorf and Egypt since then!

This term, we base our learning around the science of electricity, linking back to our trip to the Science Museum. We shall study scientists’ biographies, informing our literacy writing, and also learn how to construct electrical circuits.

Our other main focus is the upcoming trip to Ayutthaya. We are all very excited and looking forward to spending time learning outside of the classroom. Children will develop their skills of independence and resilience, as well as reflect on how to stay safe and respect each other. All these are important life skills going forward, making the trip a wonderful first step to help prepare children for future residential, sporting or performing art visits.

May I take this opportunity to thank all parents for their support throughout the year, and wish both parents and children all the very best for the future,

In English, children will begin this term by studying a variety of biographical texts, developing their comprehension and understanding of the genre. After our residential visit, we will review diary writing and explanation texts. Throughout, there will be a focus on using correct grammar as well as the genre features relevant to each text type.

Utilising the Maths Mastery approach, we will learn about statistics. Children will use fluency and apply reasoning to help solve problems.

In our Humanities, our residential visit to Ayutthaya forms the basis of our topic learning this half term, with children reflecting on expectations of the visit, as well as examining historical and geographical features. In preparation for the visit, please can we direct you to the residential page on Firefly, which contains a copy of the presentation and Kit List. This is accessible via your child’s secure login. As part of the experience, children should be encouraged to prepare their bags themselves!

During Art lessons, children will create sculptures using wire, which will then be incorporated into their science learning through the creation of an electronic shaky hand tester. Designs will be evaluated and shared with Year 2.

In the Science Lab, children will learn about electrical appliances, components and safety. We will create circuits using batteries, switches, bulbs, buzzers and wire, and investigate conductors and insulators. This will then be combined with our Art lessons.
