5CH are in the Greek Groove

In 5CH, we have been looking at forces this term and we focussed upon friction this week, investigating the shoe that would create the greatest friction to help Hermes stop slipping all over the clouds!  Children made predictions, discussed the idea of a fair test and wrote their own conclusions.

We have been planning and writing our myth, applying our understanding of story structure and descriptive techniques. The ideas have been incredible and I can’t wait to read the finished products.

In maths, we’ve studied negative numbers.

Finally, we have been debating about where we would like to live, Athens or Sparta?  Ask your children to tell you about their choice!

5MC Create Greek Pots

The children have thought about the shape of their pots and carefully designed them over the last few weeks and couldn’t wait to create them using clay. They used the ‘coil and pinch’ method to create the open space, as well as adding coils to either add width to their pots or make them thinner. I’m sure they will look great once they have been fired!

5GS Get Scientific!

In our Science lessons this week, 5GS investigated the amount of friction caused by different shoe types. They considered the material, weight and size of each shoe, taking careful note of the soles. The children found out that taking repeat recordings ensures accuracy in their results. After the practical part of the investigation, they were able to draw conclusions, based on earlier predictions.

Weekly Review – 21.09.18

Dear Parents,

This week we came together as a whole school to celebrate World Peace Day. Thank you to all pupils who wore blue and white and donated to charity. It was lovely to see Year 5 being so well represented in the Chamber Choir performance.

This Week’s Notices

Literacy

We have been studying the structure of Greek myths and have been learning about descriptive techniques. This week we will have the chance to use these in our own writing as we plan and draft our own myths.

Maths

We now move on from our place value topic and begin to use formal written methods for addition and subtraction. Pupils will be given opportunities to engage in problem solving activities through our mastery approach.

Thank you for your continued support,

Year 5 Team

Air Resistance

In 5JK we investigated air resistance by designing and making running parachutes.

We found that everyone ran slower with the parachute but also realised that it wasn’t really a fair test.

How could we design a fair test to investigate this further?

Here is some interesting information about air resistance. Take the forces and motion quiz and see how many you can get right.

5GS create Greek Pottery!

Following our study of Greek pottery designs from last week, 5GS started on the first stage of making their clay pots. They had to follow a series of steps to make sure the pots were neat and smooth so that there would be no cracking when the pots go into the kiln on Monday.

Peace Day in 5MC.

The whole school came together today to celebrate Peace Day. In class, we discussed why we have Peace Day and what we can do to bring peace to our school. This linked in really well with the character strength respect. I would like to give a special mention to Dasha, Matteo and Sarute for their excellent singing performances during the gathering. They did 5MC proud!

5JK – Rounding Games & Investigating Friction

We had fun playing this rounding game. Click here to see how to play at home. Remember to challenge yourself with rounding to the nearest 100, 1000 and 10,000 (not just 10). Here is another great way to practise rounding PAC-MAN style!

We were investigating friction by testing the grip of different shoes. Here is a good website to find out more about why we did the experiment.
