Isaac Newton and Krispy Kremes

In Science this week, 5JK have used force meters to measure the effect that gravity has on different objects. Everyone made some great Pic Collages of this to stick in our topic books.

We found it tricky when distinguishing between weight and mass. Is this something you could research more at home?

Finn and Aricia have celebrated birthdays this week – thank you for the cookies and doughnuts!

Figuring Out 5MC!

5MC made some fantastic posters that described themselves. Using the four operations, the children were able to write facts like their age, height and family members for others to solve. I was really impressed with the final posters!

Thank you to all parents who attended the Meet the Teacher event. It was great to see so many of you there.

All classes are now well into the swing of things and getting used to their daily routines.

5CH Investigate Ancient Greece

5CH have hit the ground running this week and have immersed themselves in their topic about Ancient Greece.

In English, they have been on a quest with Percy Jackson to save the world from war; in maths, they have become experts in Roman Numerals and in our topic lessons, they have been archaeologists, finding and discussing ancient artifacts.

We have also had our School Council elections. Congratulations to:

Nato (School Council Representative)

Kat (Vice School Council Representative)

5JK are getting their Greek on

We’ve had a great week in 5JK.

In Maths we have explored place value with the help of Ancient Greek Top Trumps. We have some real experts with Roman Numerals and we are much more confident with using them.

Percy Jackson has been our inspiration for writing and we have been able to storyboard all parts of the plot in great detail.

In topic lessons we have been exploring Greek artifacts and deciding what they might have been used for.

5KP take on the Marshmallow Challenge!

5KP made a great start to the year by working on team building and STEM skills to create the highest freestanding structure made entirely out of marshmallows, scotch tape and noodles! The results were pretty impressive, as you can see below!

5GS Become Archaeologists!

This afternoon, 5GS discovered the secrets of Ancient Greece when exploring many artefacts found in our classroom. We held interesting discussions about what each object could have been used for and whom they may have belonged to.

Weekly Review – 24.08.18

Dear Parents,

Welcome back.

This week, the children have been getting to know their new classrooms, new students and of course, their new teachers. We have spent this short week settling the children into the busy life of Year 5.

We have spent the week familiarising the children with their new timetables and daily routines. The children are very much looking forward to diving into their new topic; Ancient Greece. For an exciting launch into Greek Myths, we will be watching Percy Jackson on Monday as part of our Literacy sessions. This will then act as our stimuli for writing over the course of the half-term.

Our Character Strength this half term is Respect. We will be exploring this personal attribute in a variety of ways across the curriculum.

This Week’s Notices

School Council representative: All children will have the opportunity to present to the class their suitability for this role should they wish to do so. Children will be informed in due course and presentations and voting will happen in the coming weeks.

Meet the Teacher: Details should be found on the Parent Portal. Mr Keane and the rest of the Year 5 team look forward to meeting you all in the Memorial Hall at 1:45pm on Wednesday 29th August to talk about Year 5 expectations and upcoming events. Then after school, you will be given the option to meet your child’s new class teacher upstairs in their classroom.

You-Time! Please check your child’s You-Time allocation for any errors. In addition, if your child is not attending a You-Time for any particular reason, please communicate with the You-Time activity office at

Have a lovely weekend.
