Global University Counsellor Connect April 10-11 2015, Singapore

Global University Counsellor Connect
April 10-11 2015, Singapore

We are excited to announce the inaugural Global University Counsellor Connect, a two-day workshop for school based university/higher education counsellors working in Asia, organised by university counsellors working at international and local schools in Singapore.

There are now many schools in Asia like ours, where our students are not focussed on higher education in any one particular country. It is common for a student to apply to university in Singapore, the UK, the US and possibly Canada or Australia. They will then make a decision based on their acceptances and although the systems are so different, they are happy in any. Hence, as university counsellors we need to have an appreciation and expertise on university options in various countries.

As far as we know there isn’t a conference for us school based university counsellors that is international in its outlook, and most of us don’t have the budget or the time to attend a few conferences every year. Therefore we are planning a small conference for university counsellors with sessions that are country specific as well as degree focused. Some examples are as follows:

· Explore tertiary options in Canada, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong

· Global foundation course opportunities

· Where in the world could you go to study courses like Architecture, Fine Arts, Medicine

· What does “fit” mean? How do students make a list of universities to apply to? (US)

· How can students and teachers write more effective personal statements and references? (UK)

We have university admissions representatives from Australia, Canada, Singapore, the UK and the US confirmed who will run workshops together with school university counsellors.

The conference will be held at SJI International School in Singapore on April 10th and 11th, 2015. The cost for the two-day conference is SGD 250. This includes all meals over the two days but does not include flights, accommodation, travel related expenses etc.

We are working very hard to make this an affordable option for all participants. All session leaders are donating their time and SJI International is donating the facilities and resources. We are working with a hotel near the school to secure attractive rates for participants who would like to stay there. However SJI International is centrally located and easily accessible by public transport from most parts of Singapore.

We are excited about this new venture and look forward to learning together. If you or anyone from your school would like to attend please register online at http://goo.gl/muZd6U. While we are not asking for your payment at this time we seek your cooperation in making a sincere commitment to help with our planning. We will then send you more detailed information in early January.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact either of us.

Friday 21st March 2014

After a number of successful conferences in the UK, we have decided to bring together Firefly clients and interested schools in the Asia region for the first time. This event is an opportunity for you to meet the Firefly team, our schools in the region and have the opportunity to share best practise and experiences in running a learning platform. It’s also an opportunity to network and exchange tips with your counterparts at other schools and is suitable as CPD. The conference is a one day event with lunch provided and is FREE to attend.

When and where?

Friday 21st March 2014, Tanglin Trust School, Singapore.

What’s on the agenda?

•Firefly presentations: we will showcase new features and ideas and also give a sneak peak of what’s to come.

•Firefly training: members of our training team will run drop-in training sessions to help you get up to speed with the latest Firefly functionality, including making the most of mobile phones and tablets in the classroom.

•Show and Tell: schools from the region will present how their teachers and students are using Firefly.

•Development training: an opportunity to learn more about the Firefly software and how to get the most out of in-house technical support and development.

Of course there will also be plenty of time for networking and asking questions of the Firefly team.

Who is it for?

We’re keen to draw participants from across the school community. The event is pitched at teaching, technical and administrative staff at your school. We will be delighted to extend this invitation to any of your colleagues interested in attending this event.

Building Learning Power, 17th-18th February, Singapore

Professor Guy Claxton in Singapore – Building Learning Power

Professor Guy Claxton is the originator of the Building Learning Power™ approach to education and we are delighted to be able to bring him to Singapore for a two-day program in February 2014, at United World College’s Centre for International Education at the Tampines Campus of UWCSEA, Singapore.

Since 1999 Professor Claxton’s theories, ideas and techniques on creating life long learners have systematically helped students develop the general habits of mind that underpin confident, curious, creative learning for children who live in the 21st Century. These ideas and techniques have become Building Learning Power™ (BLP) and the BLP approach is now seriously embedded in around 2000 schools and colleges in countries around the world.

The two-day program in Singapore is an opportunity to find out how to genuinely develop powerful learners or create a learning powered school, ready for the challenges of the 21st Century.

The first day is an introduction to the science, the vision and the practice of BLP. The second day takes a deeper look at how to change your classroom or your school.

Full details are outlined in the event website and you can directly register here for this event.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you require further information.
