Dear Parents,

Our week started with plenty of giggles and smiles, as the children in Year 1 were treated to a “Poetry Morning”. We listened to an array of poetry, from short poems to story books, read by teachers from across the school. Over the following days, Year 1 listened to poems by Michael Rosen and were encouraged to look at poetry during Active Learning. Ask your child about a poem they’ve heard this week and encourage them to join in with you whilst reading bedtime stories and rhymes.

In Maths we started the week practising our number formation, using playdough, chalk, fingers in sand and even lego! Get creative at home and let your child practise their numbers in exciting ways. We then moved onto learning about ‘Fact Families’ for example 3, 5 and 8 are a family because 3 + 5 = 8, 5 + 3 = 8, 8 = 5 + 3, 8 = 3 + 5. Children learnt that adding numbers in any order will always equal the same answer.

In PE, the children dressed up as foxes and chased the gingerbread man. Run run as fast as you can, you can’t catch me I’m the gingerbread man! What great fun they had.

In Topic, we have continued to look at different weather. This week we focused on wind, some children made a windsock to find out which direction the wind is blowing. The children have been fascinated to find out how much water they’ve caught in their rain catchers each morning. Thanks to the rainy weather, lots of rain has been caught!

We hope you have a lovely weekend.

Many thanks for your support,
The Year 1 Team

Here are some photographs from our poetry morning.

1CD enjoying poems from Mrs Simcox.

The children have continued to amaze us this week with the confident ways in which they are approaching new challenges in the classroom. We are sure some children are quite tired after a stimulating day at school so please help us by making sure the children are well rested at home.

In Maths, we are mastering our knowledge of numbers 1-10. We have introduced the part, part, whole method, whereby we look at a whole number and discuss what parts go together to make the number. For example: 5 is the whole. 2 is a part and 3 is a part. Children have used counters, blocks, animals etc to demonstrate their counting and understanding of number.  You could ask your children to talk through this with you at home!

In Literacy, we have enjoyed learning new sounds and words as part of our frequent phonics sessions. Everyone will now have received their Literacy Planet login code and can now access the ‘My Tasks’ section for games related to spelling. We have also continued to read lots of stories – both as a whole class and in small groups – in English and in Thai.

In Design and Technology, the tools that the children have been learning to use in class are now available during their active learning time. Out on the balcony, you will find children hammering, drilling and sawing the soft wood.

In Topic, the children have been fascinated by the wet weather we are experiencing! They have enjoyed sharing their stories of rainy days and discussing where the rain comes from. Some children have even enjoyed making a rain gauge which we have placed on the balcony to measure the amount of rainfall we have had this week.

Thank you for the donations made during Peace Day. The children enjoyed gathering together as a whole school, singing songs and thinking of ways to promote peace.

Wishing you all a peaceful weekend.

Dear Parents,

The children have had a super week this week. They are now becoming settled into  the routines of being in year 1 and building new relationships with the new children and teachers.

In Maths, we have been looking at the greater than, less than and equal to symbols. We have been making groups of objects and finding which group is greater or less than the other.

In Literacy, the children have been getting used to reading in their Guided Reading groups and have continued to enjoy and join in with their favourite stories in class. They have been using role play to act out the stories and have started writing short sentences linked to their stories.

In Design and Technology, the children have been continuing to learn about the importance of safety when using tools. We all had fun practising using a saw to cut a piece of wood in half.

In Topic, the children have been continuing to look at the different weathers they can experience.

We hope you have a lovely weekend.

Good luck to all swimmers, we look forward to taking a bigger and faster team to all meets this year.

Dear Parents,

What a busy and exciting first full week the children have had at school. The children have been busy getting used to all of the new routines in their classrooms. They are beginning to show some great independence when organising their books bags, water bottles and all the other things they need to remember every day.

In Maths, we have continued counting forwards and backwards and representing numbers in different ways using practical resources. The children have also been finding one more and one less than a given number.

In Literacy, the children have been getting used to reading in their Guided Reading groups and have continued to enjoy and join in with their favourite stories in class.

In Design and Technology, the children have been learning about the importance of safety when using tools. We all had fun practising using a hammer and nails.

In Topic, the children have been learning about the weather and have created a class weather chart to show different types of weather that they have noticed happening outside of the classroom.

We hope you have a lovely weekend.

Many thanks for your support,

The Year 1 Team
