Dear Parents

As the 2017/2018 season draws to a close, it is time to start planning for the next season where we hope to further build upon all the great achievements of this year. Below is the most current competition and training schedule – this is very much still in draft format and will be updated with new events as they are received. No meet is confirmed until the meet information has been published both here and on the swimming noticeboard.

9 Senior School Swimmers (Rose, Genis, Proud L, Louis, Anuv, Peppe, Nick, Win, Matt W) traveled on Friday to The Alice Smith School in Kuala Lumpur (KLASS) for the 3rd hosting of their Torpedo’s Attack Swim Meet. For many this was their first overseas International meet; learning to travel, balance nutrition and sleep at an International meet is often the deciding factor in performance at a meet of this standard.

Competing against 13 other International Schools from across Asia including schools from Dubai, Vietnam, Thailand, Brunei and Malaysia the swimmers finished a phenomenal 6th place out of 14 teams with 750.5 points. Sadly not eligible for the average points trophy (minimum number of swimmers – 10), had they had just one additional member of the team their average of 75 points would have put them a staggering 30 points per swimmer ahead of the winning team – GEMS Dubai.

Still awaiting the final official results, unofficially they finished:

11-12 yrs Girls 8th (1 Swimmer)

11 – 12 yrs Boys 6th (2 swimmers)

13 – 14 yrs Girls 4th (2 swimmers)

13 -14 yrs Boys 5th (2 swimmers)

15 + Boys 4th (2 swimmers)

Every swimmer scored points and received ribbons and or medals. A superb time was had by all swimmers and this concluded an outstanding year for the team.

A huge thank you and shout out to our travelling cheer leading parents who took many of these phenomenal photos.

Well Done to all swimmers, I am extremely proud of you all

Mrs Gill

Please see below for the timeline of the event:

06.40 – 09.00 Team Warm Ups – assigned lanes

08.45 – 09.00 Coaches Meeting

09.20 – 11.30 Session 1 (Events 1-16)

11.30 – 12.15 Lunch (supervised warm ups until 12.00 – open lanes)

12.20 – 14.30 Session 2 (Events 17-36)

14.30 – 15.00 Break (Pool open for warm ups)

15.00 – 16.00 Finals for (7-8 / 9-10 / 11-12 / 13-14)

16.30 – 17.00 Presentations

Swimmers who are 6 & Under will only need to attend session 2 and should aim to arrive at 11.30am – The meet often runs early.

The meet is hosted as heats as finals, once all events have concluded at approximately 2.30pm there will be a short break while all events are processed, swimmers who are ranked 1-8 after the heats will proceed to the finals, swimmers 9 & 10 will be reserves and should wait in case any swimmer does not swim.  We politely ask that all swimmers remain to support our swimmers in the finals – the senior finals will be particularly exciting. Only swimmers who are present at the presentation will have the opportunity to go onto the podium should Shrewsbury be successful in one of the team trophy awards!

The program has been collated using circle seeding, this is to ensure the fastest swimmers have the best opportunity to reach the finals – the fastest 8 swimmers are spread amongst the final 3 heats of the meet, please do not be concerned if you see yourself in a different to the one you were expecting, or if your time is a very old one. This is a great opportunity to smash a new PB and to see how well you can push yourself.

Please bring any equipment with you to make as much noise as possible on poolside – those who attended Marlins Mayhem I hope will agree we had a great time being very noisy, Harrow gym is particularly chilly, so please ensure you have warm clothes for when you are not swimming. Harrow usually have a great selection of food available, however please ensure you bring a lunch in case you do not like any of the food vendors or if the queues are too long.

We have a team of 76 swimmers attending the meet, this is not only the largest number of swimmers to ever attend a meet from Shrewsbury but is also the large team attending the meet (excluding Harrow). Please can we all sit together in the sports hall or on poolside cheering our team.

We are allocated the 7.45am warm up, the bus will therefore leave from SHB at 7am, please reply to this email to confirm if you will NOT be travelling by bus. We will take a team photo at the end of Session 2 so that all swimmers are included.

All swimmers are politely asked to wear the Team swim hat which is available in the school shop, together with the team swim wear.

This is great fun meet – swimming only 25m is a chance to go as fast as possible – who needs to breathe????

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.

Best Wishes

Mrs Gill

Morning training will resume on Thursday morning 26th April. Block 4 will begin on Monday 30th April.

Dear Parents and Swimmers

Thank you for your continual support of the swimming program, each block additional swimmers join the program making it one of the largest You Time activities within the school.

Below you will find the timetable for block 4 and the You Time class progressions, there will be no swimming on Tuesdays – this is to allow the swimming coaches an opportunity to complete the American Swimming Coaches Association qualifications. We are extremely proud of our swim coaches and over the remainder of this year and the following school year they will be undertaking a number of professional development opportunities that will be of huge benefit to our swim team.

In addition to this fabulous opportunity we are trialing a new focus to the team – the Junior Swim Team (Stage 8 and above) will train together as a team 2.40 – 3.30pm, with the seniors training together 3.30 – 4.30pm. Gold Squad and Black Squad our invitation only squads will continue to train 2.40 – 4pm and 2.40 – 4.30pm respectively, with all sessions concluding at 4.15pm on Fridays. We hope this adaption to the current program will continue to build upon the great team spirit within the team.

The You-Time window opens on Monday 9th April where it will be possible to adjust the day you have previously selected through the www.misocs.com portal, for new swimmers wishing to join the program, they should select Starfish Stage 2 where they will be assessed and can progress to the correct stage for their ability. Block 4 Swimming begins Monday April 30th – end of term 3.

I’d like to take this opportunity to wish all of our swimmers attending the Thailand Open Swimming Championships the very best of luck, we look forward to hearing all about your experiences after the Songkran break. To all other members of our team I wish you all an exciting and safe holiday.

Best Wishes

Mrs Gill
