Dear Parents,

Here some links to YouTube dance and yoga videos for the children sent by Ms Alys in PE. As the children have to be inside due to pollution, it would be great if they could still be active!

Year 1

Dear Parents,

As school is closed today, here are some activities for your children to work on at home.

Reading:

  • Children to read their guided reading books and try to say as many words as they can without sounding out. They can also have a go at reading the green and red words at the front of book as quickly as they can!
  • Look at the questions at the back of the book and ask the children to answer them. They will need to look back at the book to find the answers.
  • Complete one of the ‘Reading Journal’ activities.

Writing:

  • Write a sentence about what they did at the weekend. Try and encourage the children to use a full stop, finger spaces or capital letters.

Maths:

  • Practise counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. Chanting this with your children would be helpful. Here are some YouTube videos we use in school.

Thai:

  • Children to read their Thai guided reading book, complete a Thai activity from the yellow book and choose an activity from the Home Learning grid.

Dear Parents,

Another positive week of learning this week in Year 1. We have been really enjoying our Helicopter Stories. The children have loved creating very imaginative stories and acting them out as a class.

In Maths, we have been counting to 50. We have been counting in 10s and finding the tens and ones in a number.

In English, we have been continuing our work linked to the story Lila and the secret of rain. The children have been retelling the story and ordering pictures in pairs. We have been thinking of different ways we can start the sentences when retelling the story.

In Topic, the children have enjoyed finding African countries on a map. They have also been looking at the different habitats found in Africa and thinking about which animals can be found in each one. We have then compared different parts of Africa to here in Bangkok.

Wishing you all a lovely weekend,

The year 1 team.

We hope you have all had an enjoyable holiday. The children have had a lovely first week back at school and are excited to learn lots about our new topic Africa in the term ahead.

In Maths, we have been counting forwards and backwards to 50 and learning about how many tens and ones there are in each number. We have also been completing number sequences and finding missing numbers to 50.

In English, we have started reading our class story Lila and the Secret of Rain which is set in a Kenyan village in Africa. We have discussed the different feelings shown by the main character and written about our favourite parts of the story.

In Topic, we have discussed what we know about Africa already and what we would like to find out later on in the topic.

  Have a lovely weekend,

Dear Parents,

We are all looking forward to a peaceful weekend after a fun week of learning at Shrewsbury. We started the week making new friends with Year 1 City Campus children who visited us on Monday for a day of Christmas fun! As well as making new friends we helped the gingerbread man escape down a zip wire, made a melted snowman biscuit and enjoyed a festive session of yoga! Our new friends were very impressed with our super singing as we welcomed them to our campus with a Christmas song.

In Maths, we have been learning to count in 2s and 5s. We have shaded in a number square to help us look at the patterns created by counting in groups of numbers and then we have tried to commit these to memory. We have also been learning about position and direction in Maths and Computing. Can the children use left, right, forwards, whole turn etc to direct you at home?

In English, we have continued on our journey with ‘The Jolly Christmas Postman’ visiting Humpty Dumpty in Hospital and the Wolf’s Den! This week he delivered a Christmas card with a beautiful scene of Santa’s Grotto that we used as an idea to help children write. The children had to imagine themselves in Santa’s Grotto and had to say what they might see, hear, taste, touch and smell if they were there.

In Topic, the children have been using sketching pencils to experiment making different marks and shades on paper. We compared several pencils to look at the different lines that were created by hard and soft pencils. We also used fruit and vegetables as a stimulus to draw and tried to represent the food on our paper using shading techniques.

Finally, we finished off the week with an outstanding Sports Day. The children enjoyed showing off the many skills they have been developing this half term in P.E. in a super fun and enthusiastic way.

Wishing you all a lovely weekend,

The Year 1 Team.

To celebrate our ‘Food’ topic over the past half term, we started the week with an exciting visit from some local Thai food vendors! We bought pork and sticky rice, waffles, fresh fruit and there was even an ice cream truck! The children put their Maths skills into practise by counting out the correct amount of money to pay for each item. We talked about how the food tasted and discussed what our favourite foods were. Thank you so much for all your support over the past half term by cooking with the children in Year 1! It has been such a valuable experience for the children as they have learned about so many different types and foods and where they come from.

It’s starting to feel Christmassy in Year 1 this week! We have started reading ‘The Jolly Christmas Postman’ where we go on a journey with a postman to deliver lots of Christmas cards and meet exciting characters along the way. The children have already made a Christmas card and a board game!

In Maths, we have been practising using a number line to subtract two single digit numbers. The children are getting much more confident when writing number sentences and we are so proud of their progress and determination.

Next week is a very busy week. We have City Campus coming to join us for a Christmas themed rotation day filled with many exciting activities! The school is closed on Thursday 5th and the much-anticipated Sports Day is on Friday 6th.

Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to seeing you next Friday at Spots Days!

The Year 1 Team
