Dear Parents,

Another positive week of learning this week in Year 1. The week started with the wonderful opportunity as the author Mike Curato read his book Little Elliot Big City to the Year 1 children. He also demonstrated how we works to create his books. The children have also loved their final cooking with parent sessions this week. They have created some wonderful and delicious dishes over the last 3 weeks. A big thank you to everyone who has come in to cook with the children.  Also, a big well done to 1JT and their wonderful class assembly this week.

In Maths, we have been using number lines to help us take away by counting backwards. Please encourage the children to count backwards from 20 at home to help them with this. Next week we will be using this understanding of taking away to help us solve word problems. The children will also be starting to find the difference between two numbers.

In English, we have started to read the book The Christmas Jolly Postman. We will be looking at different traditional stories linked to this so please do read these stories to your children at home to ensure they know these stories well.

In Topic, the children have been looking at a map of the world. They have been labeling the climates in the different regions and discussing the food that grows there. In Science, we have been continuing our work looking at our senses. We have been focusing on what we can hear and smell.

During the morning of Monday 25th November we have our Food Vendors in to visit. Please can all children remember to bring the money they need in order to buy the food they would like. Please can they also bring a bag so they can carry their food away with them.

Wishing you all a lovely weekend,

The Year 1 team.

Dear parents,

A big thank you to everyone who came in to cook with us this week. Your children really enjoyed sharing the experience of cooking with you and most importantly it linked to our learning in English. The children are looking forward to the next 2 weeks of parent cooking sessions.

In Maths we have been looking at 1 more and 1 less than numbers to 20. We introduced base 10 equipment to the children, they can now recognise that 2 digit numbers are made up of ‘tens’ and ‘ones. For example 13 is 1 ten and 3 ones.

In Topic we looked at where our food comes from – does it come from an animal or a plant? The children were very interested in this and enjoyed matching pictures of food to its original form. When eating at home this week, ask your child to talk about where their food comes from.

In Science we learnt about our 5 senses; taste, touch, smell, sight and hearing. Next week we will begin to identify mystery objects using these senses.

Remember to come dressed in Thai costume for Loy Krathong celebrations on Monday 11th November. Also be reminded that school will close at 2:20pm, with no You Times, as we anticipate the surrounding areas will be very busy for Loy Krathong celebrations.

Have a lovely weekend.

The Year 1 Team

Dear Parents,

The highlight of this week has been our visiting friends from Ex-Cathedra. Our music and singing lessons created so much energy and enjoyment, it was truly a wonderful experience for all students of the school. The children were able to quickly pick up new songs, new movements and learn new vocabulary in a fun and exciting way. We already can’t wait for them to return next year!

In Maths, we have been revisiting 3D shapes and describing their features. We thought about straight edges and curved faces. Ask your child if they can spot any 3D shapes at home?   We have also been reading the number names and trying to order them using only words e.g. one, two, three etc

In English, we started the week following a recipe and baking an apple pie! The children used their senses to help them generate great adjectives to describe how the pie looked, smelt, tasted and felt. We enjoyed using our new books to write down our ideas and had to use our phonic knowledge to help us spell.

In Science, we have started looking at the human body and had great fun drawing around our friends and labeling their body parts. We were also able to do this digitally by taking a photograph and adding labels.

In Topic, we have been thinking about where our food comes from. We had to really think about how the food got to the supermarket and also about the changes to the food along the way. We have come to realise that farmers and their fields are very important to us and that they must have to work extremely hard to grow such a variety of foods.

Finally, please be kindly reminded that Miss Sharman will be holding a Parents in Partnership meeting on Monday 4th November at 8am, with information regarding Year 1 Reporting and Assessing.

Enjoy the weekend, see you on Monday!

Dear Parents,

We cannot believe that we have already reached the end of our first half term in Year 1! We are so proud of how well the children have settled into their new classrooms, made successful friendships and made good progress in their learning. They are becoming such independent learners!

This week in Maths we have been learning all about 2D and 3D shape. The children are trying really hard to learn all of their names! Any help you can give them at home would be fantastic. It would be great if the children can identify shapes in their everyday lives, for example, recognising that a ball is a sphere and a tin can is a cylinder.

In Literacy the children have been busy writing a new verse for a poem we have been learning about! They are starting to use their sounds when writing new, unfamiliar words.

The children had a really exciting lesson with Mr Knight this week! They were the first year group to use our brand new robots! They impressed us with how well they worked in pairs to control the robots using the iPads. More of this to come later in the year!

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you all very much for your support in your children’s learning.

Have a restful half term break and we look forward to seeing you for our first Topic in Year 1 – Food!

Many thanks,

The Year 1 Team
