Dear Parents,

We cannot believe that we have already reached the end of our first half term in Year 1! We are so proud of how well the children have settled into their new classrooms, made successful friendships and made good progress in their learning. They are becoming such independent learners!

This week in Maths we have been learning all about 2D and 3D shape. The children are trying really hard to learn all of their names! Any help you can give them at home would be fantastic. It would be great if the children can identify shapes in their everyday lives, for example, recognising that a ball is a sphere and a tin can is a cylinder.

In Literacy the children have been busy writing a new verse for a poem we have been learning about! They are starting to use their sounds when writing new, unfamiliar words.

The children had a really exciting lesson with Mr Knight this week! They were the first year group to use our brand new robots! They impressed us with how well they worked in pairs to control the robots using the iPads. More of this to come later in the year!

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you all very much for your support in your children’s learning.

Have a restful half term break and we look forward to seeing you for our first Topic in Year 1 – Food!

Many thanks,

The Year 1 Team

Due to overwhelming interest, entries are now closed for the following swim meets:

Bangkok Prep Puppy Cup – Full team size of 50 entries has been reached.

Dear Parents,

Another really positive week of learning this week in year 1. As next week is digital citizenship week we would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone about screen time at home. Here is a link to articles from Common Sense Media which gives good practical advice on minimising screen-time at home.

In Maths, we have started to look at the concept of subtraction. We have used picture forms and maths manipulatives to gain a strong understanding of this concept.

In Literacy, the children have been continuing their work on the poem I am angry by Michael Rosen. This week the children innovated the story with very imaginative ideas of what they would do if they were angry. They added actions to their ideas and then performed the poems to the rest of the class.

In Design and Technology, the children have been creating their designs they came up with last week. The children have had a fantastic time creating from wood masterpieces such as squirrel houses to pencil pots.

In Topic, the children have focused on the weather you would experience if you visited the desert. We looked at the animals you would find in the desert habitat and how these animals are adapted to live in such a hot sandy climate.

Enjoy a lovely long weekend, See you on Tuesday.
The year 1 team.

Entries are now open for Bangkok Prep Puppy Cup: Bangkok Prep Puppy Cup 2019

54 swimmers represented Shrewsbury on Saturday at Harrow 2Fast 2Furious and Bangkok Patana Sprint Challenge swim meets.

A Harrow 2Fast 2Furious, swimmers competed over 25m in Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke, unfortunately a storm stopped the swim meet in the middle of freestyle.

For many of our U10 swimmers this was their first ever swim meet and they all performed outstandingly achieving new personal best times.

Congratulations to our 3 highest improvers:

  1. Kin R 16.5s Personal Best Improvement
  2. Grace 13.65s Personal Best Improvement
  3. Kin A 13.12s Personal Best Improvement

Unfortunately due to the storm it was not possible to complete all the events, at the point the meet was concluded Shrewsbury were in 2nd Place

Congratulations to the following swimmers who placed in the top 3 point scorers in their age group:

Taubberg 1st Place U6 Boys

Mona 1st Place U6 Girls

North 3rd Place 7-8 years Boys

Nana 2nd Place 7-8 Years Girls

Full meet results and rankings can be found in the results page here

Medals and Trophies will be sent to the school after the half term break, those swimmers who have received a medal or award will be contacted when they are available to collect.

In another rain and storm affected swim meet at Bangkok Patana swimmers competed over 50 and 100m at the Sprint Challenge Swim Meet. For our more seniors swimmers the opportunity to race short course is always fun.

There were plenty of personal bests achieved, in a very positive start to the season. As swimmers become faster their improvements become smaller, even though they are a smaller improvement their attainment is far harder. At this level we look at the percentage improvement rather than the reduction in total time.

Congratulations to our top 3 % percentage improvement swimmers:

Petter total 70.73% improvement

Monty 61.04% improvement

Kari 33.91% improvement

Full meet results are available on the results page here

This was a team event and there were no medals of trophies.

Congratulations to all swimmers.
