Dear Parents,

If your child is unable to come in to school due to the stay at home protocol, we will be setting work here on the Year 1 blog for your child to complete. Every day there will be an English, Maths and Reading activity and over there week there will be 1 Science lesson and 2 Topic lessons. This is the same as the work the children are being taught in school.

You will find links to the slides, resources and activities here:

Tuesday 25th February

Reading: Choose a book your child is reading at home (this could be your reading book from school or any other book) and ask them what their favourite part of the story is. Encourage them to answer in a full sentence and use the work ‘because’ to explain why. Children to draw a picture of their favourite part of the story.

Children to practise their rapid recall of ‘red words’ for Phonics. These words cannot be sounded out and must be read by sight. (I, the, my, you, said, your, are, be, of, no).

English: Day 2 on slides – start writing your holiday recount!

Maths: Day 2 on slides – practise counting in 5s and grouping using concrete resources to help.

The children can choose when to do the following 3 lessons throughout the week.

Topic 1: How to be a ‘Sunsmart Superstar!’ Make a poster!

Topic 2: Introduce our new topic ‘Out of This World!’ and tell the children it is about Neil Armstrong, who is the first man who walked on the moon. Ask children what they already know about Neil Armstrong and make a note of what they say. Then, ask them what questions they have about him or his moon landing and make a note of these, too! We will be finding the answers throughout this half term!

Science: Tell children our new Science topic is Materials. Ask them what materials they already know the names of (wood, plastic, metal, glass etc.) Ask children what else they know about these material and make a note of their responses (which is the strongest? Which do we build houses with? Which materials are waterproof?) Ask children what questions they have about materials and make a note of these questions. We will be learning lots about materials and finding the answers over the coming weeks!

Many thanks,

The Year 1 Team
