English: This week we are starting a new book – Beegu. Before you read the book or watch the video of the book being read please watch video – Year 1 Hook 2020. Then show the children the front cover of the book on slide 2 of the PDF. Discuss these questions with your child: Where is the story set? Who is the character? Where do you think he is going/come from? How do you think he is feeling in the picture?

Maths:

Start by counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. Use the videos from last week if needed. By counting in 2s count the legs of the aliens. Then ask you child to write a repeated addition number sentence to show this eg: 2+2+2+2+2=. Then do the same with the apples and fish, hands etc. Encourage the children to complete the sentence on the slide using the mathematical language. Can you find anything else around the house you can put into groups? For example, the shoes in a cupboard into pairs.

Topic:

There are two topic lessons which can be done at any point over this week.

Lesson 1. Watch this video and go through the facts about Neil Armstrong on the slides. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CbTaDOuSePk Once you have watched the video discuss with your child what you can recall about Neil Armstrong. Is there anything else you can tell us about Neil Armstrong?

Lesson 2: Recap the main life events of Neil Armstrong then cut out and order the life events from the sheet.

Science:

This Science lesson can be done at any point during this week.

Recap that different objects can be made from different materials: wood, rock, fabric, plastic, metal, glass. Go around your house on a material hunt. See what you can find. Take a picture of the different objects. Can you label each object and the materials they are made from?

Have a lovely day,

The Year 1 Team
