Archives for February, 2020

Here is your child’s learning for today. Thank you to all of the parents who have been in email contact so far. It is lovely to see what the children have been learning at home.

Reading: Please continue to read with your child every day. You can also read books online too on websites such as Oxford owl.

https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/find-a-book/library-page/

You could also listen to a story being read from a website such as storylineonline.net and ask your child questions about the text or ask them to re-tell the story.

English: We have finished writing our recounts in class and editing our work. Your child could demonstrate what they have learnt by writing a recount of this week remembering to use past tense verbs, capital letters, full stops and finger spaces independently. We have been practising making our sentences longer by using ‘and’ or ‘because’ so can they do this too?

Maths: Your child can practise all of the skills they have learnt this week to ensure they are secure. Can they count forwards and backwards in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s? Can they solve problems involving counting in these steps like in the example on Day 4 of the Maths slides?

The children have really enjoyed finding out different facts about Space this week, reading Space stories and looking at non-fiction books about Space. Your child could write a list of their own questions that they want to find out the answers to about space and discuss them when they return to school.

Have a lovely weekend

The Year 1 Team.

Here is your child’s learning for today. Remember to look at Monday’s guidance for any topic learning suggestions too. Any work that your child completes can be handed in to the class teacher upon your child’s return to school.

Reading: In English we are looking at past tense verbs. Can your child spot any past tense verbs in a book of their choice? If not, can they spot present tense verbs and change them into past tense?

English: Day 4 on slides provided on Monday. Recap with your child how to change verbs into the past tense. Shout out some words in present tense to them, e.g. play, walk, swim, eat, sleep, run… and see if they can shout back the past tense e.g. played, walked, swam, ate, slept, ran. Perhaps your child could make a poster linking past and present verbs. Today your child will act as a teacher, they will self mark their own holiday recount. In school we use green and orange highlighters to mark. Using the orange highlighter/pen they should highlight all the correct capital letters, the full stops and past tense verbs. Using the green highlighter/pen they should highlight any errors they have made. Then using a green pen they should correct these errors. See example below and remind your child that mistakes are great! They are proof that we are learning. Your child shouldn’t be afraid to make a mistake.

Maths: Day 4 on slides provided on Monday. Starter activity: Recap using comparative language to talk about the size of objects (tall, taller, tallest, short, shorter, shortest). Have a go at using real life objects at home and ordering them by size. Main: Today your child will learn about equal groupings – this links to early multiplication and division. It is important at this stage you only talk about ‘groups’. Model sharing objects between you and your child “I have 4, you have 6. Are the groups equal?” Discuss why/why not? “If we have 10 objects, how can we share them equally between us?” Let your child investigate how to share them “Yes that’s right… There are 2 groups of 5 sweets. There are 10 sweets altogether” Activity: See if your child can find different ways of sharing different amounts  equally between 3 or 4 groups. Use the sentence stem: “There are __ groups of __ sweets. There are __ sweets altogether.”

Any questions please don’t hesitate to contact your class teacher. We hope you enjoy learning practically at home with your child.

The Year 1 Team.

Here is your child’s learning for today. Remember to look at yesterday’s guidance for any topic learning suggestions too. Any work that your child completes can be handed in on your child’s return to school.

Reading: Look at your child’s reading book or a book they have chosen. Can they tell you if it is a fiction or non-fiction book? Can they tell you some of the differences between the two types of book. For example, non-fiction books contain real facts and and real pictures. Look at your books at home, can you sort them into two piles ‘fiction’ or ‘non-fiction.’

English: Continue writing your holiday recount. Make sure you include where you went, who you went with and what you did there. For example your child may write: Last week I went to the beach. I traveled on a plane with my Mummy and Daddy. I ate an ice-cream and played in the sea.

Maths: Day 3 on the slides. Subtraction starter and then moving on to counting in groups of 2. Maybe your child might like to make a poster to remind them how to count in 2s? Use this daily to help them commit the numbers to memory.

Please find a link to the homework grid for this term in the home slides folder (link supplied Tuesday 24th February) which also includes lots of great, practical activities for children to complete at home whilst supporting their learning at school.

The Year 1 Team.

Dear Parents,

If your child is unable to come in to school due to the stay at home protocol, we will be setting work here on the Year 1 blog for your child to complete. Every day there will be an English, Maths and Reading activity and over there week there will be 1 Science lesson and 2 Topic lessons. This is the same as the work the children are being taught in school.

You will find links to the slides, resources and activities here:

Tuesday 25th February

Reading: Choose a book your child is reading at home (this could be your reading book from school or any other book) and ask them what their favourite part of the story is. Encourage them to answer in a full sentence and use the work ‘because’ to explain why. Children to draw a picture of their favourite part of the story.

Children to practise their rapid recall of ‘red words’ for Phonics. These words cannot be sounded out and must be read by sight. (I, the, my, you, said, your, are, be, of, no).

English: Day 2 on slides – start writing your holiday recount!

Maths: Day 2 on slides – practise counting in 5s and grouping using concrete resources to help.

The children can choose when to do the following 3 lessons throughout the week.

Topic 1: How to be a ‘Sunsmart Superstar!’ Make a poster!

Topic 2: Introduce our new topic ‘Out of This World!’ and tell the children it is about Neil Armstrong, who is the first man who walked on the moon. Ask children what they already know about Neil Armstrong and make a note of what they say. Then, ask them what questions they have about him or his moon landing and make a note of these, too! We will be finding the answers throughout this half term!

Science: Tell children our new Science topic is Materials. Ask them what materials they already know the names of (wood, plastic, metal, glass etc.) Ask children what else they know about these material and make a note of their responses (which is the strongest? Which do we build houses with? Which materials are waterproof?) Ask children what questions they have about materials and make a note of these questions. We will be learning lots about materials and finding the answers over the coming weeks!

Many thanks,

The Year 1 Team

Dear Parents,

What a busy and exciting week we have had. All of the classes thoroughly enjoyed their visit to see their friends at City Campus where they had fun learning a dance, designing a mask and even making their own African food. Year 1 have also had a great time this week watching the Year 3 show Peter Pan. It was amazing to see such amazing acting and singing from the Year 3 children.

In English, the children have been using the PebbleGo app to help them research and take notes about their chosen African animal. They have enjoyed learning lots of new facts about their animal and then writing the information in simple sentences using capital letters and full stops.

In Maths, we have moved onto mass and capacity. We have been using vocabulary such as heavy, light, heavier, lighter, balance, equal as well as measuring liquids and describing the capacity of a container using vocabulary such as full, half full and empty.

In Science we have been learning about herbivores, omnivores and carnivores and classifying animals into these groups.

Please remember to sign up for a parents evening time for after half term.

Have a lovely half term break and see you all again on Monday 24th February.

Book Trailer Contest

Have you ever seen a movie trailer? It’s a commercial for a movie encouraging you to see it. A book trailer is very similar: it tells you enough information to convince you to read the book.

  • You may use ANY book from the Shrewsbury library.
  • Your contest entry must be a movie in MP4 format, shared via Google Drive to Mrs. Rous (Stephanie.Rous@shrewsbury.in.th). The name of the creator or creators must be the TITLE of the contest entry file. Please include your class. See Example below.
  • You may use a green screen, iMovie, MovieMaker, another video creation platform, stop motion animation, any animation platform, etc. You may film it outside of school. It MUST be your work, no video clips from the internet or movies allowed.
  • Book trailers may be made individually or with ONE other student as creators. You may have friends assist with the acting if more people are needed, but no more than two people can receive credit for the creation of the book trailer.
  • Background music and images may be used, but see #8
  • The book trailer should be between 30 and 90 seconds in length.
  • You should end the trailer with a clear shot of the cover of the book.
  • If  you use someone else’s work (background music, images from the internet, etc.), you will need to have a credits section at the end giving credit to the ORIGINAL creator and the ORIGINAL place of publication. (If you are using the music of the band Queen, for example, you cannot put a website other than the band’s official site as the source of the music. A picture taken by a famous photographer cannot be taken from a friend’s Instagram page. It must come from the photographer’s page.)
  • ALL contest entries due on Monday, 9 March, by the end of You-Time.
  • Book trailers will be shown on screens in the library during Fully Booked Week.

For this year our Fully Booked week starts at 16th-20th of March 2020

Let’s see what is coming up !

>>Link to PowerPoint presentation<<

We are looking forward for your amazing participation!

Dear Parents,

This week we celebrated Art Week across the Junior School. Year 1 were allocated the Sustainable Global Goal of ‘1. No Poverty’ and ‘2. No Hunger’. The children discussed the meaning of poverty and hunger in their classrooms and decided on a way to decorate their cow. (See pictures below!) Each class learnt about the ‘Send a Cow’ charity, which links nicely to our topic on Africa and our story ‘Lila and the Secret of Rain’. For more information on this charity, please visit here.

In English, we learnt about the features of non-fiction texts. Ask your child to point out the heading, subheading, photographs, captions, labels, diagrams and contents page in a shared book. Can they tell you which animal they are creating a report about?

In Maths, we have moved onto measurement. One lesson focused on using the vocabulary; short, shorter, shortest, tall, taller, tallest. In another lesson the children found objects around the classroom that were shorter than or longer than their Maths books. This led onto us using rulers to measure objects and write the measurement down using ‘cm’. Have a go at measuring items at home. Please also consolidate counting forwards and backwards to 50.

Have a lovely weekend,

The Year 1 Team.

1JT and their ‘No Hunger’ cow.

1NT stamping handprints on their cow to symbolise stopping poverty.

1JS and their African sunset cow.

1CD and their ‘No Hunger’ cow.

1LS created 20thb notes and added them to their cow in bundles of 3. Did you know that people in poverty survive on 60thb a day?

Art Competition

Thank you to everyone who took part in the re-designing of the character strengths competition. If your child hasn’t yet submitted their entry but would like to, Miss Wood has extended the deadline to Monday.

Here are some examples from across the Junior School.

We will be celebrating 16th – 20th March.

Please see below for competitions you can take part in at home.

Good luck!
