Dear Parents,

We were pleased to welcome the children back from quarantine this week and were very impressed with the learning that they had completed at home. Thank you to all the adults who supported this learning.

In English we have continued our adventures with Beegu, the alien who landed in our school. We had such fun acting out scenes from the book and then trying to think like the character. We enjoyed thinking of questions that we would like to ask Beegu and wrote our questions using a question mark. Next week we are planning to create Beegu’s planet so please help your child by sending in a shoe-box for their diorama.

Maths was exciting this week as we took our first step towards deepening our understanding of multiplication. We have been using new vocabulary: rows, columns, arrays, equal, doubles and represents. The children have enjoyed working with a variety of maths resources to get a ‘feel’ for the numbers that they are counting and writing about. We have also been singing counting songs to help us to remember how to count in 2s and 10s.

The children have been very enthusiastic about acting out scenes of when Neil Armstrong first landed on the moon. We imagined the rocket ride to the moon and thought about how it would feel to be in Space with no gravity! We experimented trying to stay in the air for longer by jumping, twirling or launching ourselves but gravity always bought us back down again-it was great fun though!

Next week is book week and I’m sure you are all working with your children on their homemade costumes. Anything goes when you use your imagination so please allow your children to create away, we can’t wait to see the results next Friday at 8am when we watch, and participate in, the ‘World Book Day Parade 2020.’

Have a wonderful weekend!

Pop Up Cat Craft

Even though the library is in closure but that doesn’t mean the fun has to STOP! We have brought you the exciting craft we have found on Easy Peasy and Fun to share it’s call ‘Pop Up Cat Paper Toy‘. So let’s get started shall we?

Get the Cat Pop Up Box Paper Toy Template Here
Click here to save or print –> Cat Pop Up Box Paper Craft Templates

Follow These Step by Step Instructions

Print out the template for our cat pop up box paper toy (you can grab it at the end of this tutorial).

If you printed our black and white templates, color the cat (and mouse).

Cut out the box template (large long rectangle).

Flip it over and color it.

We are showing you how to make the cat and mouse pop up box and we decided we will be making a grass scenery.

The scene was colored with different shades of green using brush markers to get the grass look.

You can make any scenery you want.

Cut out all other pieces of this crafty project.

Time to fold, fold, fold!

Let’s start with the box. Fold along the dashed lines – score each fold to make it super crisp (we used a craft stick).

Apply glue on the last “flap”, where it says glue.

Stick it on the other designated are for glue.

Take the cat. Apply glue on the cat – on the back side and only on the bottom part of the body, and glue it inside the box (on the M shaped rectangle).

When you press the box the cat should pop up.

Now turn the box around and repeat all steps for the mouse.

Done? Now when you press the box a cat will pop up on top and the mouse will show on bottom.

Pretty cool right?

The other design has a cat poping up from the box (there are even some cool decorations for the box on the design).

Thank you Andreja Vucajnk from Easy Peasy and Fun for such and incredible cute craft for us to have fun with and please go ahead and follow the link https://www.easypeasyandfun.com/ for more amazing craft ideas.

Reading

Continue reading books for pleasure both at your child’s level and with you reading a more difficult text to your child. You could also play Forest Phonics which we use at school to practice the sounds learnt in phonics lessons. Please see the link below:

https://www.ictgames.com/mobilePage/forestPhonics/index.html

English

The children have enjoyed learning the story of Beegu this week, writing about their favourite part of the story and acting it out. Can your child write a book review of the story using the template below? It is saved in a Reading folder in the link shared with you at the beginning of the week.

Maths

You can review your child’s Maths learning from this week to see what they have remembered. Ensure they are secure with counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s as we have been practicing this skill a lot in the classroom.

Have a go at this reasoning question and explain your answer.

Next week we will be learning about doubling single digit numbers in Maths.

Don’t forget that Fully Booked Week is coming up in a few weeks and Year 1 are all going to design and make their own costumes. You should have received a letter on the parent portal which explains that everyone will be dressing up as an alien! So time to get creative, draw a plan and work on your own costume!

Dear Parents,

Below is the link to some activities you can do at home with your child to stay active:

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1X9frGTuKSeTM7k3fWHbxC–eZWBy1EP3?usp=sharing

Or you could do some Cosmic Kids Yoga or Just Dance videos on YouTube together with your child. I’ll put some of my favourite ones below. I’d love to know what you’re favourite ones are too.

Have a lovely day.

Ms Alys

Dear parents,

Find below the work for Thursday 5th March. We are looking forward to your children joining us back in school next week.

Reading: Complete tasks on Literacy Planet. Recap all the phonics sounds that your child’s teacher has sent you over the past 2 weeks. Can you child remember these sounds? Can they read and write words with these sounds in?

English: Day 4. In English today your child will learn “To make simple inferences of a character’s feelings or behaviour”. Retell the story of Beegu with your child. Think about the scene where Beegu is playing with the children in the playground and the teacher comes and takes him away.

Imagine you are one of the children, how would you feel? Ask your child to ‘freeze frame’ – think about body gesture and facial expression. Now imagine you are the teacher, does your expression change? Please email this picture to your class teacher because next week we will use it in class.

Maths: Day 4 on the slides. Starter: Recap counting in 5s, enjoy this song together Main: Can your child spot the mistakes that have been made on the slides and rewrite the correct number sentences to match the pictures? For example:

Can your child complete the following activities.

Any questions, please ask your class teacher. We hope you and your child are doing well at home, we look forward to welcoming them back soon.

Here is your child’s learning for today:

Reading

Choose a book with a character in  it. It can be any book from your collection at home. Look at the setting of the book and describe where it takes place, for example a gloomy old castle or a small town. Can you draw a new setting for the character to go an adventure too? For example Little Red Riding Hood could visit the city.

Phonics play is a free website designed to help children recap and apply the phonics sounds they have learnt at school. Start with phase 1 and work your way up!

https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/PicnicOnPluto.html

English

Today we will be looking at the character of Beegu and how she might be feeling as she explores the Earth. Pause the video on each page and ask your child – How do you think Beegu is feeling? Encourage your child to speak in full sentences using the sentence prompt on the slides ‘I think Beegu is feeling…because…’

Your child could draw a picture of Beegu and label the picture with different feelings using their phonics knowledge to sound out unknown words.

https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/PicnicOnPluto.html

Maths

Practise counting in tens following the link on the slides. Today you could try some practical grouping activities around the house. For example find 6 pairs of shoes, group them and then write a number sentence 2+2+2+2+2+2=12

Find three people and ask them to hold out their hands- write a number sentence and count how many fingers 5+5+5+5+5+5=

Take a photo and send it to your class teacher!

Don’t forget that Fully Booked Week is coming up in a few weeks and Year 1 are all going to design and make their own costumes. You should have received a letter on the parent portal which explains that everyone will be dressing up as an alien! So time to get creative, draw a plan and work on your own costume!

Dear Parents and Swimmers

I wanted to make contact with you all as a number of swimmers and parents have reached out to me with enquiries regarding the BISAC swimming scheduled for next weekend (14th & 15th March).

The safety of all swimmers within the Shrewsbury community will always be our first priority and with this in mind Shrewsbury International School are closely monitoring and following all guidance from the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health and other government agencies.

A decision has already been made by BISAC to postpone the following events:

  • Junior (9yrs – 12ys) BISAC swimming (hosted by NIST) has been postponed until Saturday May 9th
  • BISAC Swim Festival (7 – 8Yrs) hosted by Shrewsbury International School City Campus has been postponed until Saturday May 16th

A decision regarding Senior (13 years+) BISAC Swimming (Hosted by Ruamrudee) will be made on Monday 9th March, at this point, if the decision is made to go ahead with the swim meet, I will contact all swimmers for their entries on Monday 9th March.

Senior swimmers may enter a maximum of five events (including relays) and teams may enter a maximum of four swimmers per individual event. Due to the increased number of swimmers able to swim per event for seniors, we are in the lucky position that we do not need to go through a selection process. Swimmers are able to pick the events they feel are their strengths or favourites.

Full event details are available on the swimming blog, please click here and have a look this weekend and consider what may be your chosen events.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Best Wishes

Mrs Gill

Director of Aquatics

Here is your child’s learning for today.

Reading

Choose some books from this link: https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/find-a-book/library-page/

Ask children to predict what might happen in the story based on the front cover. Encourage them to explain their predictions. For example ‘I think the story will be about space because I can see a spaceship and an alien’. Read the stories together and see if their predictions were correct.

Keep practising sight reading ‘red words’ (words which cannot be sounded out, they must be learned by sight)

I, the, my, you, said, your, are, be, of, no, what, all, was, we, so, to, me, call, her, there, want, go, old, some, he

English

Day 2 on slides. Read Beegu again and ask the children to discuss their favourite parts of the story. Children to draw a picture of their favourite part and write a sentence to match. The sentence must have a capital letter, finger spaces, full stop and use the word ‘because’. For example:

My favourite part of the story was when Beegu found the puppies because she was so happy.

Maths

Day 2 on slides. Keep practising writing number sentences to match the repeated addition pictures. Complete the worksheet in the folder.

Here is a Cosmic Kids yoga video that we use in school – your children might enjoy doing something active at home!

Here is a fun video about the planets

Many thanks,
